About

Iesha Young started Our Girls in 2017 with a teen book club designed to encourage girls to discuss essential conversations around mental health, stigma, support, and social wellness. Studies have shown that teens are more comfortable discussing their problems with peers than adults, so we created a fun way to engage teens in conversation while also increasing literacy, comprehension, creative thinking, and socializing.

In 2019, we expanded our programs to build confidence, foster friendships, and provide mentorship, hoping to inspire girls to advocate for themselves and create a sense of community that sets them up for the life they deserve.

Today, Our Girls, Inc. continues that foundation while broadening our reach. Each year, we spotlight a critical public health issue affecting Black girls and women, from domestic violence and reproductive health to economic empowerment, through awareness campaigns, community events, and fundraising. The funds we raise go directly to organizations doing the work on the ground, allowing us to support solutions beyond what we could build alone.

Literacy gave us our start. Now, we're using that same spirit of connection and advocacy to tackle the issues most urgently affecting the health and well-being of our community — because every girl deserves the tools, support, and information to thrive, no matter the circumstance.
